What Is the Esthetician exam?

The Esthetician exam is the final step towards receiving your Esthetician license. 

It was developed by the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology, and it is designed to test your theoretical and practical knowledge in esthetics. 

How many times can I take the Esthetician exam?

For most states, you should be able to take the Esthetician exam as many times as you need to. 

Some states do have stricter policies, however, and they allow only a set number of attempts during one calendar year.

How many questions do I need to get right on the Esthetician exam to pass?

The number of questions you will need to get right to pass differs for each state since different states have a different number of questions on their exam. 
For the NIC exam, you will need to answer 70 out of the 110 questions correctly to pass. That is because 10 of the questions are unscored, pretest questions. 

What happens if I fail the Esthetician exam?

If you fail your Esthetician exam, your application for an official license will be delayed.

What should I focus on for the Esthetician exam?

For the Esthetician exam, make sure you spend enough time understanding the anatomy and typologies of skin and skin disorders. 
However, do not make the mistake of focusing on one chapter too long. You should properly review all topics before your exam. 

What to expect on my Esthetician exam day?

On your Esthetician exam day, you can expect to be asked to show a valid ID before entering the examination room. You will also be asked to leave any personal items that do not pertain to the examination in a designated area. 
For your written exam, remember that the proctors are not allowed to communicate with you. 
After giving you the relevant instructions, they will not speak to you. 
For your practical exam, the proctors will offer instructions regarding every step of the procedures and any other relevant information. 
You are expected to perform the procedures during the set amount of time. 
You will not be allowed to ask the proctors for help unless it is an emergency. 
The products that you brought need to be properly labeled in English. 
You need to make sure you have the appropriate quantities as well because the proctors are not allowed to provide you with more. 

What to bring on my Esthetician exam day?

The items you need to bring on your exam day may differ from one state to another. 

You will need to bring an ID and pens for your written exam. Any other additional items should be communicated to you by your school/testing center. 

For your practical exam, you are expected to bring all supplies necessary for the procedures in appropriate quantities. States that perform the exam on mannequin heads will also ask you to bring your own. Alternatively, you will need to bring your own models. Keep in mind that you will have to attend to two clients during your exam. 

Can I wear a head covering during the exam?

You can wear religious head coverings during the Esthetician exam. 

Any other head coverings, such as caps, hoods, beanies, or hats
